Thinking about trying wakeboarding or wakesurfing for the first time? You’re not alone. These are two of the fastest-growing watersports in the UK – and for good reason. They’re exciting, addictive, and far easier to learn than most people expect.
At Loch Earn Wakeschool, we specialise in teaching complete beginners and making your first time on the water fun, relaxed and confidence-boosting. Here’s everything you need to know before you get started.

What Is Wakeboarding?
Wakeboarding is where you ride a board while being towed behind a boat, similar to snowboarding on water. You’ll start in the water, the boat gently pulls you up, and before you know it you’re riding across the wake.
Great for:
Beginners of all ages
Anyone who likes adrenaline and learning new skills
People who’ve snowboarded, skateboarded or surfed before (but not required)
What Is Wakesurfing?
Wakesurfing is where you ride the endless wave created behind the boat without holding the rope. Once you’re up and balanced, you drop the rope and surf the wave just like you would at the beach.
Great for:
Beginners of all ages
People who want something fun, relaxed and social
Many people find wakeboarding easier as fewer things to think about when starting out.

Do I Need Experience?
Not at all. Most of our customers at Loch Earn Wakeschool have never done watersports before. That’s exactly what we’re set up for.
We:
Explain everything clearly before you go on the water
Start at slow, comfortable speeds
Give you coaching throughout the session
Adapt to your confidence and ability
You are never rushed and never pressured – it’s all about enjoying yourself.
Is It Hard to Learn?
Honestly? No.
Most beginners are surprised at how quickly they get up and ride.
Many first-timers are up on their first or second go
Wakeboarding in particular is very forgiving and beginner-friendly
Our modern boats, equipment and teaching methods make a huge difference
You don’t need to be super fit or sporty – just willing to give it a go.
What Age Can You Start?
We regularly teach:
Children from around 7–8 years old and older
Teenagers
Adults of all ages
We tailor the board, rope length and boat speed to each person, so everyone feels safe and comfortable.

What Should I Wear?
All you need is:
Swimwear
A towel
Warm layers for afterwards
We provide:
Wetsuits
Buoyancy aids
All boards and equipment
Just turn up ready to have fun – we’ve got everything else covered

Is It Safe?
Yes – safety is our top priority.
At Loch Earn Wakeschool:
All sessions are run by experienced, qualified instructors
You’ll be fully briefed before going on the water
We use modern boats designed specifically for wake sports
You’ll always be supervised and supported
We work at your pace and build confidence step by step.
Which Is Better for Beginners – Wakeboarding or Wakesurfing?
Both are great, but:
Wakesurfing – harder, more relaxed, very social
Wakeboarding – more adrenaline, very rewarding, brilliant for first-timers
If you’re unsure, many people try both in the same session and see what they enjoy most.
